Northeastern Arizona Fine Arts Association Plans Allen Garns Pastel Workshop The Northeastern Arizona Fine Arts Association, (NEAFAA) will offer a two-day pastel workshop with artist Allen Garns, Friday and Saturday, August 27 and 28, 2010. The workshop will be held at Northland Pioneer College, in Show Low, Arizona. The two days will be comprised of one day working with still life and the second day will be a session studying the figure and portrait using live models. The price will be $125 for NEAFAA members and $150 for non-members. NEAFAA’s goal, as a non-profit organization, is to encourage and promote the artistic growth of the visual arts in the community. Garns, at present, is an instructor at the Art Institute of Phoenix and Scottsdale Artist’s School. He has practiced as a freelance illustrator for more than 20 years, and has received awards from the Society of Illustrators of New York, American Illustration, and Communication Arts and Graphics. He has extensive experience in pastel, oil, acrylic and drawing. His work is currently being exhibited at the Scottsdale Fine Arts Gallery. During his years as a freelance illustrator he continued to paint his own work, which largely consists of urban imagery and still-lifes. His work is about light. The way light encounters a surface never ceases to amaze him. He agrees with Walt Whitman who said “To me, every hour of the light and dark is a miracle. Every cubic square inch of space is a miracle”. Allen states that “in each project I am involved with, I try to invest my paintings with a specific sense of light to establish form, describe space and evoke emotion. Over the past few years I have been sharing my ideas and experience with others through teaching and have found that to be a wonderful compliment to my own painting.” Ann Yarmal, workshop coordinator, encourages those interested in attending to register early. At present, registration is limited to 16 attendees and Ann anticipates those spots to fill quickly. To register or learn more about the workshop, please contact Ann at ,or, phone at 928-532-5900.
